A study in light, material and proportion.
Brief
Books, collections and the useful things of everyday life can make a small home feel crowded before anyone sits down. Archive Apartment considers an 82 square metre dwelling in Cologne for an imagined resident who reads, works at home and cooks regularly. The brief is to create generous storage without filling each room with separate cupboards. A small writing place should belong to the living space while still feeling like a distinct destination.
Spatial response
A single integrated wall organises the apartment. Shelves, pantry doors and a desk form one continuous composition: open bays for books, closed sections for everyday equipment. Where a working surface is needed, the wall changes depth. Wider openings connect the main rooms, making the storage edge legible from different positions. The pantry sits close to the kitchen while staying visually quiet from the sitting area. Modest furniture leaves the principal route open. Moving through the apartment means passing books, daylight and small places to pause, while distinct moments of enclosure remain.
Material notes
Smoked oak fronts sit alongside warm off-white walls and a restrained mineral surface. Simple shelf edges and handles let the collection lead. A slightly darker desk surface marks the working place. The palette balances quiet surfaces with personal objects.

What this study explores
The study asks how storage can shape a home rather than simply occupy it. It balances a continuous architectural element with the lively irregularity of a personal collection. Useful heights, clear routes, books and everyday needs guide a clear organising idea that can be refined further.
